Revenant: Dennis returns to Substack
Vitality, Zainab Balogun, Hear Word and more updates from Dennis
Hello!
It's Dennis here.
It sure has been a while since you heard from me. But I’m back now, and I mean fully back to you guys.
I wanted to put pen to paper before heading out today for breakfast. And also give you some updates on where I’m now and what has happened to Afro Adulting.
So that job I was doing last year, where I had to write a daily newsletter that made me feel like death every single weekday for two years, I left that job. In December I joined Pulse Nigeria as Entertainment and Lifestyle Editor and that has been a roller coaster.
But I have been thinking about capitalism lately, what we give to it and what it denies us and I thought I had some thoughts I needed to share with my own community. It also got me thinking of identifying more as a writer, a title I’ve always scoffed at. One of these days I’ll tell you guys about my love-hate relationship with the identity, writer.
But back to my job at Pulse Nigeria. I have been up to a lot of things there. I have done some interviews and some reviews. I saw a private presentation of the play Hear Word just this week and it was phenomenal. I also got to speak with the brilliant Ifeoma Fanfunwa the creator, director and writer about her next steps for the movement. That is the piece I’m currently working on. It will be on Pulse, but I will share it with you next week on Saturday as well so expect that email.
I also had a long conversation in February with Folake Olowofoyeku (of CBS’s Bob Hearts Abishola fame) who has been into wellness of late. Speaking to her felt like listening to a sage. She has walked the path and done a lot of work. Her favourite word these days is “vitality.” You can check it here.
Not sure what the universe was saying but I also spoke with Tolu Olowofoyekun, who is Folake’s cousin. He is part of the creators of the Disney series Iwájú, a smart reassuring gentleman. You can find that here.
Then there is the interview I did with Zainab Balogun. She is at peace and content with what life has offered her as a professional actor. It was a refreshing conversation. Read it here.
For Afro Adulting I am writing about what I have learnt, measuring excellence and hard work in a capitalist environment. It will hit your inbox next week.

Have a great weekend.
Kudos Dennis
